August is a very important month in South Africa
It is the beginning of the season of Spring (even though the weather may not be reflecting that right now), it’s the month when the sandwich was invented in the middle of a gambling game by the Earl of Sandwich who ordered a piece of meat in between 2 slices of bread in 1762, Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D, and Dr Martin Luther King made his iconic I Have A Dream speech to about 250 000 people during this month in the year 1963.
These are all major historical events that happen around the world, but in South Africa – August is the most important month of the year because of what it represents – the dawn of the women’s revolution. In the year 1956, more than 20 000 women of colour marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in protest against travel restrictions placed by the government at the time. These travel restrictions required people to carry a Pass, which was a booklet that limited travel by people of colour within the country’s borders and enforced a curfew. Should the ridiculous laws be broken, the punishment was often violent and severe. The women of our nation were not having it and chose to change the course of history forever. Because of their efforts, we are free to go wherever, whenever, and for this reclamation of power, we have them to thank.
